The city of Worms occupies the Rhine valley a few kilometers north of Mannheim, the area where the city stands is full of vineyards, in fact the famous German wine “Liebfraumilch” is produced there. The city, one of the oldest in Germany, was founded by the Romans as a fortified centre, over the centuries it developed to become the capital of the Kingdom of the Burgundians in the 5th century, hence the legends of the Nibelungs, which are set in Worms. However, the period of greatest splendor for the city was the late Middle Ages, between the 11th and 16th centuries.
Worms Cathedral, built between the tenth and twelfth centuries, is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture in Germany, the city houses other Romanesque churches and medieval walls, this makes Worms the second largest German city, after Cologne, in terms of Romanesque architecture.
