The climate of Bulgaria is continental and has cold winters and hot summers. The mountain range of the Balkans (Stara Planina) which cuts the country in two from west to east, also affects the climate, the areas north of the mountains and in particular the Danube plain suffer from a colder continental climate and more rainfall than the southern areas located in the shelter of the mountains and under the influence of the Mediterranean climate. The coast along the Black Sea also has a mild climate.
This climatic difference between the north and the south of the country is also noticeable in the values of the temperatures in the Danube plain. In winter by several degrees lower than in other areas of the country and on the other hand the temperatures are very high during the summer.
