The county is bordered to the north and west by the Northumberland, to the east is bounded by the North Sea, to the south it borders the county of Durham. The land is flat and partly wavy. The county is virtually divided into two by the River Tyne coming down from the Pennines and forms a wide estuary. To the south it territory is crossed by the River Wear which flows into the North Sea at about ten kilometers south of the Tyne. The area is highly urbanized. The largest city is Newcastle upon Tyne, located on the north bank of the Tyne estuary. On the estuary of the River Wear is the city of Sunderland. For the British people Christmas it is one of the most important holidays of the year. The Christmas markets are a rather recent tradition imported from Germany.
