The capital of the autonomous province of the same name, Trento is located in a strategic location along the banks of the Adige River. The city was an important trading center since Roman times, but reached the zenith of power during the sixteenth century, when the city became a possession of the Hapsburgs. Trento is dominated by the imposing Buonconsiglio Castle (Castello del Buonconsiglio), and maintains a well preserved historical center where you will find buildings of great value, such as the church of Santa Maria Maggiore – in Gothic-Renaissance style – the Cathedral of San Vigilio – dating back to twelfth century – and various civil buildings including the medieval Praetorian Palace, the Palace of Albere, the sixteenth-century Palazzo Geremia and Palazzo Thun. Trento Christmas Market takes place in the square of the Fair (Piazza Fiera), near the Duomo and only 200 meters from the imposing Buonconsiglio Castle (Castello del Buonconsiglio), you should not miss a visit to the castle and other buildings in the historic center of the city.
