This post is also available in: Deutsch

Maranhão has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons based on rainfall. High temperatures and high humidity occur during the rainy season. While during the dry season the temperatures are always high but the humidity is lower.

Along the coast, rainfall is greater and the dry season is limited to a short period between August and November. In the northwest part of the coast the climate of Maranhão tends to become equatorial, and the dry season is further reduced. In São Luís do Maranhão there are on average more than 2,200 mm of rain per year, most of which falls between January and May. The rainiest months are March and April.

Inland the dry season lasts longer and rainfall tends to decrease. In these regions there are between 1,600 mm and 1,200 mm of rain per year, the dry season is from May to October or from June to November according to the regions. The rains fall mainly between December and April or May, the rainiest month is March.

Temperatures are stable in every season with small variations. In Maranhão the average maximum temperatures tend to be a few degrees higher in the inland regions than the coast, they vary between 29 ° C and 31 ° C along the coast and between 31 ° C and 34 ° C / 36 ° C in the interior. The average minimum temperatures have even lower variations and vary between 22 ° C and 24 ° C along the coast and 19 ° C / 20 ° C and 22 ° C / 23 ° C in the interior.

The sea water temperature remains stable throughout the year between 27 ° C and 28 ° C.
