Iran because of its extension and its geographical conformation is a country with a very varied climate. In the country, an arid climate typical of the steppe predominates, which on the Iranian plateau has a marked continental character. The climate of Iran is strongly influenced by the presence and conformation of the mountains. In fact, towards the south, the mountains prevent winds from the sea from bringing humidity into the interior making the climate of most of the country very arid.
THE CLIMATE OF THE IRANIAN PLATEAU
In the Iranian plateau, whose average height is around 1,000 meters, most of the relatively low annual rainfall falls between November and April. In the region of the Iranian plateau, the average annual rainfall records values around 250 millimeters or even lower. The temperatures in the Iranian plateau undergo strong diurnal and seasonal temperature variations. In winter there are average daily temperatures close to zero while in summer, despite the altitude, the average temperatures often exceed 30 ° C.
In the north-west of Iran, the winters are cold with abundant snowfall and the average temperatures are below zero in the months of December and January. Spring and autumn are relatively mild seasons, while summers are dry and hot. Along the Caspian Sea the climate is sub-tropical with mild winters and cool summers. In this area of Iran, due to the presence of the Elbruz Mountains, the rains are abundant and well exceed the average of 1,000 mm per year and in some more western locations they reach up to 2,000 mm per year. Iran’s climate along the Caspian Sea coast has rainfall well distributed throughout the year, but more intense between September and March. In this region, temperatures rarely drop below freezing even in winter and summer temperatures rarely exceed 29 ° C.
THE CLIMATE OF THE SOUTHERN AREAS
In the south of the country the winters are mild and the summers are very hot, with very high average daily temperatures which in the summer months can reach values close to 40 ° C. The climate of Iran in the coastal plains along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman is characterized by mild winters and very humid and hot summers. The Khuzestan, a plain located in southwestern Iran on the border with Iraq, has a hot summer climate usually accompanied by high humidity. In the highest valleys of the Zagros mountains, rainfall reaches average annual values of over 500 millimeters. In the Zagros mountains, winters are harsh with sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfalls.
The sea water temperature in Iran is very hot. In July and August it reaches and exceeds 32 ° C. While in February, the month in which the water of the Persian Gulf is colder, it remains above 22 ° C. So with these temperatures swimming in the Persian Gulf can be done at any time of the year.
WHEN TO GO TO IRAN
Due to the vastness of the country and the difference in the climate of Iran, it is difficult to establish an ideal season to visit the country. However in the Iranian plateau, where the most visited and the most interesting tourist attractions of the country are located, the best times for a trip are spring and autumn. These seasons have mild temperatures and usually clear skies. On the other hand, the summer months for the sweltering heat and the winter months for the intense cold should be avoided.
