The climate of Bahia: when to go to Bahia

This post is also available in: Deutsch

The climate of the state of Bahia is tropical, with stable and rather high temperatures in every month of the year, but with two seasons differentiated by the rain regime. The intensity of the rains varies considerably based on the distance from the coast, inland the dry period is very long.

ARID INTERIOR AND PRECIPITATIONS ALONG THE COAST

Along the coast there are on average 1,500 / 2,000 mm of rainfall per year with very high humidity values. In the Salvador area, the rainiest months are between April and July, but it also rains in the other months of the year without a dry season. Along the coast south of Salvador, rainfall decreases, around Porto Seguro, the driest months are August and September.

In the interior regions of the Sertão of Bahia, particularly in the northern part of the state of Bahia, the climate is semi-arid. Here the dry season extends between April and October, but even in the rainy season, rainfall is rather low. The annual average is usually below 500 mm.

Only in some elevated areas of the interior of Bahia does the climate tend to become tropical in altitude. These climatic conditions occur in the localities of the serra do Espinhaço, near the border with Minas Gerais, and in the highest parts of the Chapada Diamantina. In these areas the temperatures are milder and more pleasant. In the Chapada Diamantina area, rainfall varies between 1,000 mm and 1,400 mm per year. The dry season is between May and October, the rainy season between November and April.

TROPICAL CLIMATE WITH STABLE TEMPERATURES

Temperatures are high in most of the state, with little seasonal differences. In general, the maximum average temperatures are maintained throughout the year between 31 ° C and 27 ° C, but in some places in the interior they also reach values of 35 ° C. Average minimum temperatures vary more between locations and based on altitude. They range from 24 ° C / 21 ° C in Salvador, to 18 ° C / 14 ° C in the southern highlands near the border with Minas Gerais.

Along the coast of Bahia, the sea water temperature remains between 28 ° C and 25 ° C all year round, which means that any time of year is suitable for a beach holiday.

WHEN TO GO TO BAHIA

The best time to visit the highest inland areas of the state of Bahia, such as Chapada Diamantina, are the driest months between May and September. Along the northern coast, the rainiest months between April and July are to be avoided, while the southern coast has less rainfall but well distributed in every month of the year.
