Avila is located in the central-northern part of the Spanish Meseta at over 1,100 meters above sea level. Due to its height, Avila has a purely continental climate with harsh winters and frequent snowfalls during the winter, while summers are rather short, hot and dry.
A CLIMATE WITH COLD WINTERS AND WARM SUMMERS
The climate of Avila is extremely cold in winter with average minimum temperatures which are below zero in the months between December and February. The coldest month is January which has an average minimum temperature of -1.9 ° C and an average maximum temperature of 7.6 ° C. The frost days are many, the annual average is 90 days with temperatures below 0 ° C. In the months of November to March Avila has between 12 and 20 days of frost per month, but frost days are also recorded in April, May and October.
Summers are short and in July and August it is sometimes very hot, although thanks to the height of the city the temperatures of Avila are always cooler than the surrounding cities. The average maximum temperatures reach the highest value in July with 28.5 ° C while the average maximum temperatures in July reach 12.6 ° C. Avila has an annual average of 2,644 hours of sunshine and 83 days of clear skies.
THE PRECIPITATIONS ARE RATHER POOR
Precipitation is scarce all year round, reaching a total of 400 mm. The rainiest months are April, May, October, November and December. July and August are the driest months, but the months of February and March are also dry. The city has an annual average of 67 rainy days. In the winter months snow is a rather frequent phenomenon, the snow days are 20 per year, the snow falls more frequently between December and March, but the months of November, April and May also have snow days.
WHEN TO GO TO AVILA
The best time for a visit to Avila are the intermediate seasons, spring and autumn, when the weather is warm and sunny, the most suitable months are May, June, September and October. But thanks to the height of the city, even the height of summer can be a good time to visit Avila.
