Tellaro: a charming seaside village in the Gulf of Poets

This post is also available in: Français Italiano Português Español

Tellaro, charming fishing village overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia, is a small fraction of the town of Lerici, from which is a few kilometers to the southeast. The village is accessible by car via a single road that from Lerici runs through the villages of Maralunga and Fiascherino. Founded in the Middle Ages, probably in the fourteenth century, the village was completely destroyed in 1400 by an attack of the Saracens, abandoned, it was rebuilt only in 1564.

Tellaro is part of the prestigious list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the village is characterized by narrow streets, stairways and small squares that reflect the condition of the soil where it is built the village. The historic core of the village is one of the most intact in this part of the Ligurian coast, built on the cliff it follows its shape and is disposed at various levels. Jutting out into the Gulf, in front of a small square, stands the church of St. George (San Giorgio) built in the second half of the sixteenth century. The church tower is all that remains of one of the two Pisan towers of defense of the town walls, the other tower is visible at the entrance of the village.

The village of Tellaro, in recent years, has become famous for being the residence, from 1960 until his death in 1999, of the writer and film director native of Turin, Mario Soldati.

In the vicinity of Tellaro is to visit the Natural Park Montemarcello-Magra (Parco Naturale Regionale di Montemarcello-Magra), a park that extends over 4,300 hectares and includes the river park of the Magra river mouth, the valley of the Magra and Vara rivers and the promontory of Montemarcello. In the park you can hike and walk. Outside the park, but equally beautiful, a marked path allows you to reach Tellaro from Lerici in one hour and forty-five minutes, the path – rather shaded and therefore also suitable for the summer period – passes through maquis shrubland areas (macchia mediterranea), wooded areas, olive groves and it runs along the coast allowing the view of the different sea views.
