A former port of the Hanseatic League, the city of Stade is located along the Elbe River west of Hamburg. Stade’s heyday was the 13th to 17th centuries, during which time the town was Hamburg’s main rival as the region’s most important port.

The city today is full of historic buildings, the old port is very beautiful with the old houses that are reflected on the canal, among the most beautiful architectures those of the Lutheran church (St. Cosmae et Damiani), the town hall, the Swedish warehouses (Schwedenspeicher) and the Swedish armory (Zeughaus).
