San Gallo (St. Gallen) originated in the Middle Ages (6th century) with the construction of a hermitage centre, which later became a large monastery, which in the 8th century became one of the most important cultural centers in Europe. Subjected for centuries to ecclesiastical power, in the 15th century the city joined the Helvetic Confederation. The most important building in the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the Abbey of St. Gallen (Fürstabtei St. Gallen), a monastery founded in the 7th century, which developed in the Carolingian era (8th century), but whose current Baroque appearance dates from the eighteenth century. The Abbey contains a very important library, the Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen, with ancient books, manuscripts, illuminated texts. The St. Gallen Christmas Market is the busiest event in the city during the Christmas period.

1) St. Gallen Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt St.Gallen). The Christmas market fills the streets of the old city of St. Gallen (Altstad) and generally extends between the cathedral, the Waaghaus, the Bohl and the Marktplatz. The festively decorated stalls offer nativity figurines, mulled wine, candles, Christmas decorations, toys and Christmas biscuits. One of the special features of Christmas in St. Gallen is usually the Christmas Circus (Weihnachtszirkus) which puts on a show every evening.
