Sion, located at an altitude of 500 meters along the upper Rhone valley, is the capital of the canton of Valais. The old part of the city (vieille-ville) is made up of a perfectly preserved medieval village full of fine old buildings. The main tourist attractions include the Basilica de Valère – a fortified church dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries – and the Castle of Tourbillon (Château de Tourbillon), whose evocative ruins face the Basilica de Valère from a hill. The city is surrounded by four castles, those of Valère, Tourbillon, Majorie/Vidomat and Montorge. The Sion Christmas Market is the most important event that takes place in the city during Christmas. Usually, from the beginning of December to the beginning of January, the Chemin des Crèches is also set up in the historic center of Sion, an itinerary within the old city that allows you to visit about twenty nativity scenes and ends with the living nativity scene .
