Selestat is a small town in Alsace, located between Strasbourg and Colmar, on the left bank of the Ill river. Rich in historic buildings from different eras, including two important churches, the Gothic church of Saint-Georges, and the Romanesque church of Ste-Fois. The Selestat Christmas Market attracts many tourists during the Advent period. Selestat has a famous library, the Bibliothèque humaniste, which preserves an important collection of medieval manuscripts and Renaissance books. The town is located near the Alsace wine route and the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle. The Selestat Christmas Market is the most important event of the year in this small village in Alsace. Among other interesting things to visit the Maison du Pain d’Alsace, a museum dedicated to the history of bread and bakers.
SELESTAT CHRISTMAS MARKET
The Selestat library preserves a manuscript from 1521 in which a Christmas tree is referred to for the first time in the world, so Selestat can be considered the country where the Christmas tree was born.
1) The Christmas Village (Village de Noël). Small Christmas village made up of wooden houses which are generally found in place d’Armes, in front of the town hall of Sélestat. Here you will find Christmas decorations and handicrafts, while the children will have Santa Claus’s letterbox (Boîte aux lettres du Père Noël) at their disposal.
2) Christmas Tree Market (Marché aux Sapins). Market usually located in Place Ehm, offers Christmas trees of all sizes.
