Sankt Wendel is a pretty little town in the Saarland located on the river Blies not far from the borders with France and Luxembourg. The town has medieval origins, was the site of a castle and a market, was often destroyed and devastated during the wars that fought in the area between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Among the most important buildings in the historic center is the Wendalinus basilica, a late Gothic basilica; the eighteenth-century Wendelskapelle and the Fruit Market (Fruchtmarkt).
SANKT WENDEL CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Sankt Wendel Christmas Market (St. Wendeler Weihnachtsmarkt). It is one of the most famous markets in Germany, the market usually takes place in the pedestrian area of St. Wendel and is made up of over 150 wooden houses, all decorated by hand, whose exhibitors are carefully selected and represent the best of local crafts. The street of medieval crafts and a large display of nativity scenes complete the market.
Usually every afternoon Sankt Wendel is crossed by the wonderful caravan of the Magi, with camels in tow, which create an oriental atmosphere in this beautiful German town. They go to the stable where the Child Jesus is with the Madonna and St. Joseph, it is really a beautiful re-enactment in costume. Even Santa Claus with his reindeer and his wonderful sleigh is present in St. Wendel. You will find lots of entertainment for children, a parade of fire trucks, the giant Christmas pyramid, the fantastic wood of the gnomes and a toboggan run.
