Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, is a city with a rich and long history, in Roman times it was known under the name of Rotomagus, and became the second city of Gaul. Even in the Middle Ages, Rouen was one of the most important cities of France, becoming the capital of the Duchy of Normandy. At the beginning of the 13th century the city was annexed to the Kingdom of France. Located on the right bank of the Seine, Rouen has a typically medieval-looking historic centre, the ancient heart of the city is characterized by ancient half-timbered houses, Gothic churches and noble palaces. Rouen is famous for its Gothic cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen), but there are many other buildings of great value, among them the church of Saint-Maclou (Église Saint-Maclou), in flamboyant Gothic style, the church of Saint Ouen (Église Saint-Ouen), the Joan of Arc Tower (Tour Jeanne d’Arc), the Palace of Justice (Palais de Justice) and the Gros Horloge.
