Munster is a small town on the Haut-Rhin in Alsace, less than 20km west of Colmar. The country is famous for its typical Munster cheese, a soft cheese made from cow’s milk. The country is very impressive despite the destruction suffered during the First World War. The Munster Christmas Market is the most important Advent event in this Alsace town. In the Middle Ages Munster was declared an imperial city by Charles IV. At the beginning of the 14th century, the town was surrounded by walls.
MUNSTER CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Munster Christmas Market (Bredlamarik) on the Place du marché. The market usually takes place in the Place du marché between the town’s two churches, one Protestant and the other Catholic. The wooden chalets display the typical products of Alsace, a large illuminated Christmas tree dominates the center of the market square. The name of this market comes from the typical Alsatian Christmas cake “le Bredla”.
2) New Year’s Market (Marché de l’an neuf). This Alsatian handicrafts market is usually held after Christmas, always on the Place du marché (usually from December 26th to December 31st).
