Monschau is a beautiful historic town in Germany located southeast of Aachen (Aachen), very close to the border with Belgium and along the narrow valley of the river Rur. The village was not damaged during the Second World War and therefore still shows its ancient appearance with a typical architecture of wooden houses with slate roofs.
Founded in the 13th century as a castle, during the 19th century the town became rich thanks to trade and the dyeing of fabrics. Monschau is dominated by the castle ruins, its historic center, partly pedestrian, lends itself to pleasant walks along the narrow streets, bridges and small squares, all surrounded by beautiful wooden architecture mostly dating back to the 17th-18th century .
MONSCHAU CHRISTMAS MARKET
Monschau Christmas Market (Monschauer Weihnachtsmarkt). The market, one of the most romantic in Germany, usually takes place in the Marktplatz where local traders and craftsmen, in many wooden houses, are waiting for you to offer you their products.
The Advent period also involves the town’s shops, which in turn become small Christmas markets, not to be missed is a visit to the Christmas House (Weihnachtshaus), a three-floor shop specializing in Christmas items. The market is then animated by musicians and shows.
Inside the castle that dominates the town, every Saturday and Sunday in Advent, you will find a beautiful living nativity scene, while another beautiful nativity scene dedicated to the landscape is set up in the church of San Michele.
Monschau during Christmas really has a fairy-tale appearance, with its beautiful wooden houses all decorated and decorated with lights and garlands.
