The Principality of Monaco, ruled by the Grimaldi dynasty since 1297, is one of the smallest countries in the world, second only to the Vatican City. The small nation is, on three sides, surrounded by French territory, while on one side it overlooking the Mediterranean, the border with Italy is only 10 km away. The Principality is made up of an urban area with five main districts: Monaco-Ville, La Condamine, Monte Carlo, Fontvieille and Moneghetti. The Principality of Monaco is a small kingdom which in recent years has become thanks to the tax facilities a privileged residence of wealthy people of high finance and international jet set. This caused a massive construction throughout the territory of the small state which today to remedy the lack of land has begun to snatch land from the sea. The forest of buildings that characterizes the cities of Monaco and Monte Carlo has become today one of the best known symbols of the French Riviera.
