Small town in Saxony, located along the Elbe river just 25 km north-west of Dresden, famous for its precious porcelain (Meissen Porcelain, Meißener Porzellan, also known as Dresden Porcelain), the city is a jewel of architecture, and is certainly the best preserved city in Saxony.

Among the things to visit the 15th century Albrechtsburg Castle, the nearby Gothic cathedral (Meißner Dom), one of the purest Gothic buildings in Germany, and the Frauenkirche. The historic part of the city is located around the market square at the foot of the castle hill and contains interesting Renaissance buildings.

MEISSEN CHRISTMAS MARKET

Meissen Christmas Market (Meißner Weihnacht). Market of about 30 stalls, beautifully set in the beautiful historic center of this Saxon town, on the stalls of the artisans the splendid Meissen porcelain is proudly displayed, but you will also find candles, Christmas decorations, wood sculptures and local gastronomy. The old town hall is transformed into a large Advent calendar and, to the delight of the children, Santa Claus arrives every Sunday (2.00-3.00 pm; 4.30-5.30 pm).
