Martigny is a small Valais town of Roman origin which is located at an altitude of 471 meters at the crossing point of important roads coming from France and Italy. In the surroundings of Martigny Julius Caesar had a battle in 57 BC. In Roman times Martigny was an important center known as the Forum Claudii Vallensium, from that period today an amphitheater and some ruins remain. The Roman city was founded between between 41 AD. and 47 AD. Martigny was also important in the Middle Ages when, in the 13th century a castle, château de la Bâtiaz, was built there. The fortress was located in a strategic position, so as to be able to control the important road that led to the Gran San Bernardo Pass. The Martigny Christmas market is the most important event that takes place in the city during Christmas.

1) Martigny Christmas Market (Marché de Noël de Martigny). The market takes place in the central square of Martigny (Place Centrale), where visitors will find the works of local artisans and numerous innovative products and ideas.
