The city, founded in the thirteenth century, was part of Denmark until the seventeenth century, its golden age was the fifteenth century, when it became one of the most important ports in the country, used by merchants of the Hanseatic League for their trade. during this period Malmö was enriched with fortifications and palaces.
In the 17th century Malmo and its region, Scania came under Swedish control. Because of this, between the 17th and 18th centuries Malmo experienced a period of steep demographic decline and a decrease in importance.
