Mainz, located along the Rhine River, south of Wiesbaden and southwest of Frankfurt am Main, is an ancient city founded by the Romans with the name of Mogontiacum, initially a fortified place then became the capital city of the province of Upper Germany .

In the 13th century Mainz became a Free Imperial City reaching the apex of power and wealth. In the 15th century the city was conquered by the troops of Adolf II of Nassau.

During the Second World War the city suffered heavy destruction. Today the most important building is the imposing cathedral (Mainzer Dom) in Romanesque style dating back to the 10th century, the whole historic center is very beautiful with numerous wooden houses in the typical half-timbered style.

MAINZ CHRISTMAS MARKET

1) Mainz Christmas Market (Mainzer Weihnachtsmarkt). The Mainz Christmas Market dates back to the 18th century, when it was called “Nikolose Markt”. Normally the market takes place around the city’s cathedral in a truly superlative setting with the beautiful architecture of this historic German city in the background. The Christmas stalls offer products such as Christmas decorations, handicrafts (straw, pottery, wooden toys). Among the attractions of the Advent celebrations in Mainz we usually find the large Christmas pyramid, 11 meters high, the life-size nativity scene and countless music and Christmas carols performances.

The Mainz Christmas Market is usually made up of over 100 festively decorated wooden houses that have the historic and ancient Cathedral of St. Martin of Mainz (Martinsdoms) as a backdrop, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Numerous concerts take place in and around the cathedral during the Advent season, you can hear and see performances of classic fairy tales in the Mainz State Theater (Mainzer Staatstheater) or buy the popular Christmas card prints (Weihnachtskartendruck) in the printing house of the Gutenberg Museum (Gutenberg Museums).
