Lyon, capital of the Rhône-Alpes province, is the second largest metropolitan area in France after Paris. City of Roman foundation, it was, during the empire, the main city of Gaul. Lyon has always been one of the most important cities in France, located at the crossroads of major communication routes, in particular with Italy, it was important in the Renaissance for the silk trade.
Today the city is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites for the richness and beauty of its historic buildings, in particular they are part of the UNESCO heritage: the Roman district and the Fourvière; the silk district (Croix-Rousse); the Renaissance district of Old Lyon (Vieux-Lyon) and, finally, the Presqu’île, which presents a varied architecture ranging from the 12th century to today.
LYON CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Lyon Christmas Market (Marché de Noël) on Place Carnot. The Lyon market welcomes almost 150 exhibitors from all over France and other European countries, the traders and craftsmen are selected by a special commission for their professionalism and the originality of the products sold. The market presents numerous types of goods, among which you will find jewellery, candles, gift items, Christmas decorations, children’s games, there are numerous stalls with traditional nativity scene figurines, the famous “Santons” and obviously there is no shortage of French gastronomy.
2) Place de la Croix-Rousse Christmas Market. This indoor Christmas market consists of thirty exhibitors selling many types of products, among which you can find food, clothes, jewellery, nougat, sweets, gifts and mulled wine.
3) The Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières). Four evenings where technological innovation mixes with popular tradition for one of the most important events in Lyon.
