Historic town of Lower Saxony, located less than 50 km south-east of Hamburg, Luneburg (Lüneburg) is one of the best preserved cities of northern Germany, an ancient city of the Hanseatic League, thanks to its salt mines it became an important and rich city from the 13th century.

Today the city is one of the best preserved in the country, to see the beautiful Baroque Town Hall overlooking the market square, the suggestive Am Sande, with houses with beautiful facades, and the “Wasservierte” (city on the water), the ancient port where salt was shipped.

1) Lüneburg Christmas Market (Weihnachten in der Hansestadt Lüneburg – Weihnachtsmarkt am Rathaus). The Christmas Market extends through the streets of the historic center and around the Town Hall of this picturesque German town, recreating a Christmas fairytale atmosphere, made up of lights and beautiful decorations. Christmas with its atmosphere enhances even more the beauty of the houses and streets of this historic town in Lower Saxony, the artisans and traders of the market wear medieval clothes and offer all kinds of gift items, toys, decorated candles in their stalls , glass and wrought iron works, and unique to this city the “salt lamps” of Lüneburg. Lüneburg’s Christmas program also includes demonstrations of craftsmen’s work, games and shows for children. The water tower of the city, all lit up, becomes a large Advent wreath.
