Lucerne (Luzern) is an important tourist destination in Switzerland, capital of the canton of the same name, the city is located on the shores of Lake Lucerne at a height of over 400 meters above sea level. The best-known attraction in Lucerne is the famous Kapellbrücke, a 14th-century wooden bridge over 200 meters long, dominated by an octagonal tower, the Wasserturm. But the whole historic center of the city is very suggestive, nestled between the lake, the river and the mountains, there are valuable wooden buildings with painted facades, interesting churches, such as that of St. Leodegar, in a beautiful Renaissance style and another ancient wooden covered bridge the Spreuerbrücke, dating back to the 15th century.
LUCERNE CHRISTMAS MARKETS
The city of Lucerne hosts several Christmas markets during the Advent period.
1) Lucerne Christmas Market (Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt). Lucerne’s Christmas market is held on Franziskanerplatz. A paradise of poinsettias, decorations with biscuits, sweets, spices, punch, mulled wine for young and old. In Advent the Franziskanerplatz transformed again into a small town of colorful wooden houses. In the heart of the city, but a little off the busy and noisy shopping street, is this Christmas market where you can breathe a unique contemplative mood. The market is made up of about 70 welcoming stalls full of a vast range of products for your gifts.
2) International Market (Internationales Weihnachtsforum Venite, Kapellplatz Luzern). This market is made up of stands from 20 different countries that present how Christmas is celebrated differently all over the world. The goal of “Venite” is a culinary, cultural and contemplative exchange dedicated to enriching visitors and promoting understanding between different cultures. The Christmas market has a clear profile: The operators have to offer typical Christmas products from their country. The offer ranges from handicrafts to food and drinks.
3) Christmas Tree Market (Christbaummarkt Luzern). Dedicated to Christmas trees, this market usually starts a week before Christmas and is located along the Schweizerhofquai.
4) Weinmarkt Christmas market in the old town of Lucerne (Luzerner Handwerksmarkts). Market made up of about 70 artisans who offer their own handicraft products.
