Lord Howe: an island off eastern Australia

Lord Howe Island (56 km²) is a small volcanic island located 600 km off the east coast of Australia, around 31 ° south latitude and 159 ° east longitude. The island, which is part of the Australian state of New South Wales, measures 11 km in length and 2 km in width at its widest point. The population residing on the island is around 350 inhabitants.

Lord Howe is a small tropical paradise full of natural life, with a beautiful beach surrounded by the coral reef, which is the southernmost coral reef in the world. The island became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Ball’s Pyramid is a very high basaltic rock that is located 20 km southeast of Lord Howe, this impressive rock formation is 562 meters high above sea level and measures only 200 meters wide, together with the island of Lord Howe it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The plant called Kentia is native to the island of Lord Howe, most of the forests of the island are formed by this beautiful palm tree.

HOW TO GET TO THE ISLAND OF LORD HOWE

Lord Howe Island has a small airport (Lord Howe Island Airport, LDH) located in the only flat area of the island. The subsidiary of Qantas – Eastern Australia Airlines – has regular connections with the island.

Eastern Australia Airlines has direct flights from Sydney (2 hours flight), while Sunstate Airlines makes connections from Brisbane (1 hour 45 minutes flight). Seasonal flights, usually from February to June and from September to December, are also carried out from Port Macquarie.
