The city of Lienz is the main center and the capital of East Tyrol, the city is located in Val Pusteria at about 670 meters above sea level. Lienz originated in the Middle Ages, even if the area was already inhabited in Roman times, just 4 km from the current Lienz are in fact the ruins of the Roman city of Aguntum.
The historic center of Lienz retains part of its medieval aspect, dominated by the ancient medieval castle, the Schloss Bruck, and with the Liebburg, the palace-residence of the Barons Wolkenstein-Rodenegg.
CHRISTMAS MARKET IN LIENZ
1) Lienz Christmas Market (Lienzer Christkindlmarkt). The Christmas market is usually held in the main square of this Tyrolean town, in front of the Liebburg palace, now the town hall, the facade of the building is transformed into a large Advent calendar and an exhibition of nativity scenes is set up inside. The Lienz Christmas Market with its romantic atmosphere is among the most evocative in Tyrol.
The market hosts stalls of artisans and merchants selling candles, gingerbread, toasted almonds, hot chestnuts and mulled wine. But you will also find many gift ideas, Christmas decorations, handicrafts and culinary delicacies, all immersed in wonderful Christmas music. Interesting, forming part of local folklore, are the Parades of Krampus, terrifying wooden masks that parade through the streets of the town while the big bells are ringing.
