Lausanne, the capital of the French-speaking canton of Vaud, overlooks the northern coast of Lake Geneva at about 500 meters above sea level. Lausanne’s most interesting building is its Protestant cathedral, the Gothic-style structure dates back to the 13th century. Also near the cathedral is the Château Saint-Maire, built at the end of the 14th century and now the seat of the government of the canton of Vaud. The Lausanne Christmas market is the most important event that takes place in cities during Christmas.
