Laos has a tropical monsoon climate characterized by hot, humid and rainy weather from May to October, from a relatively cooler, dry season between November and February, and by a period warmer and drier between March and April.
In the city of Vientiane, the average maximum temperature values are above 30°C for most of the year, only during the months of December and January can be reached 28°C, the hottest month is April with 34°C. The average minimum temperatures are also quite high, the peak is reached in June with 25°C, while the coldest months, December and January, have average minimum temperatures of 16°C.
In warmer areas of Laos along the valley of the River Mekong can be reached average maximum temperatures of 40°C in March and April. On the other hand in the highlands at high altitudes can be reached temperatures of 5°C in December and January.
The rains vary greatly depending on the altitude and latitude, the wettest areas of the country are the uplands around Vientiane, the central areas of the country and the southern province of Champasak where can be reached 3,700 mm of rain per year.
In the capital Vientiane, the average ratio is about 1655 mm of rain in a year, the wettest months are between May and September. The second largest city in Laos, Luang Prabang, record values of 1360 mm of rain per year.
