In the 19th century Kiel became the main base of the German Navy. The oldest building in the city is the Nikolaikirche dating from the 13th century.

KIEL CHRISTMAS MARKET

Kiel Christmas Market (Kieler Weihnachtsmarkt). The Christmas market of this Baltic city in Germany takes place in the central square of the Alter Markt (Holstenplatz) and in the adjacent Holstenstraße. In the market of this Baltic city you will find fur and wool clothing, local crafts, handmade jewelry and wooden toys. You can taste the typical marzipan (Marzipan) of the Kiel region, the Poffertjes – a traditional pastry cake – the Liebesäpfel – candied apples – and the original Dresdner Christstollen, a typical German Christmas cake with dried fruit and candied fruit. Artisans from Kiel’s twin cities, such as Tallinn in Estonia, Kaliningrad in Russia and Gdynia in Poland, also participate in the market, so in addition to the local craft stalls you will find stalls displaying Russian, Polish and Estonian handicrafts. For the entertainment of adults and children you will also find a large ice skating rink.
