A town in northern Hesse, located near the border with Lower Saxony, Kassel, it was founded in the 10th century as a castle guarding a bridge along the Fulda river, later granted city rights. In the 16th century it became the capital of the landgraviate (or county) of Hesse-Kassel.

The city is famous for being the place where the Brothers Grimm lived part of their life and wrote most of their fairy tales. Kessel suffered considerable damage from the Second World War, only a few old buildings remain in its center such as the Druselturm, the Brüderkirche and the church of St. Martin. Outside the center is the 18th century Wilhelmshöhe Palace with the famous Hercules monument (Herkules).
