Heidelberg is an important city in Baden-Württemberg, located in the hills along the Neckar River near Mannheim, home to Germany’s oldest university. The Romans had a fortified camp here, but the birth of the city is traced back to the Middle Ages, when, in the 12th century, a monastery was founded there, later a castle also developed and in 1386 the university was founded, Heidelberg is also home to an important library founded in 1421. The city today is dominated by the ruins of the ancient medieval castle, in Gothic and Renaissance style. The historic center (Altstadt), which extends long and narrow between the hills and the river is very beautiful, some churches and numerous old houses and buildings are worth seeing. The Heidelberg Christmas market is a traditional Christmas event in this region of Germany.

HEIDELBERG CHRISTMAS MARKET

Heidelberg Christmas Market (Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt). The Christmas Market, which is made up of around 140 stalls, is usually held in five different locations around the city: Bismarckplatz, Anatomiegarten, Universitätsplatz, Kornmarkt and in the Marktplatz. The Christmas environment of Heidelberg is truly suggestive, the city is all lit up and decorated, even the merchants compete to set up their windows. In the castle there is a large advent calendar. Other Christmas attractions include musical events, a large ice skating rink, and entertainment for children.
