This post is also available in: Italiano Español

Hallein is a small historic town in the Salzburger Land, located just south of Salzburg, near the German border. The area where Hallein stands has been known since Roman times for its salt mines, which also made it rich in the Middle Ages and in the following centuries. The salt mines located in the hamlet of Dürrnberg, no longer used, can be visited today. In the town there is also the grave of Franz Xaver Grubers, composer of “Stille Nacht”, and a museum dedicated to this famous Christmas song. The old part of the village of Hallein is a jewel of medieval architecture made up of narrow streets and alleys. The Hallein Christmas Market takes place on the Advent weekends.
