Feldkirch is a beautiful medieval Austrian town located near the borders of Switzerland and Liechtenstein and near Lake Constance. The city originated in the 13th century as a castle along an important trade route between Italy and Germany. Excellently preserved, Feldkirch is today an important tourist destination, among its attractions, the ancient medieval castle (Schattenburg), the late Gothic cathedral of St. Nikolaus, the ancient fortifications. Feldkirch belongs to the Small Historic Towns of Austria (Kleine historische Städte). The Feldkirch Christmas market is considered one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Vorarlberg.
