The climate of South Georgia is a cold and harsh climate which according to the classification in use is considered a polar type climate. South Georgia in fact has a cold, windy and often cloudy climate, with few variations between the various seasons. The north-east oriented coasts of the island are less exposed to winds from Antarctica and have a slightly milder microclimate.

On the island of South Georgia there are average maximum temperatures of 1 ° C in June and 9 ° C in February. While the average minimum temperatures in August are around -5 ° C, and those in February of 2 ° C. Average annual rainfall is in the order of 1,400 mm. Snow can fall at any time of the year. But especially during the winter snow is frequent, with accumulations exceeding one meter per year.

The South Sandwich Islands are much colder than South Georgia, being located much further south and more exposed to the influence of the Antarctic winds. These islands are also surrounded by the frozen pack between mid-May and late November.
