Einsiedeln is a small town in the canton of Schwyz located in the area south of Lake Zurich, and close to the artificial lake of Sihlsee. Einsiedeln is located at an altitude of almost 900 metres. The place where the town stands today was used as a hermitage since the 9th century. Subsequently, in the 10th century it became a monastery, and in the 11th century the present town arose around the monastery. Einsiedeln has a beautiful old town and is a well-known summer resort and winter sports centre. The Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln is considered one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Switzerland. The Einsiedeln Christmas Market is the town’s busiest event during the Christmas period.
EINSIEDELN CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Einsiedeln Christmas Market (Einsiedler Weihnachtsmarkt). The market is one of the largest and most beautiful in central Switzerland. It takes place at the monastery and along the main street of Einsiedeln and consists of over 130 stalls with gifts, handicrafts and gastronomy. You will find a large Nativity scene, a representation of the crucifixion of Christ, and two interesting museums, one dedicated to gingerbread and the other to minerals, with exhibits of minerals from all over the world. The cultural program with music, shows and games is very rich.
