The climate of Morocco can be divided into four climatic areas. In the north between the Rif mountains and the coast, the climate is Mediterranean. While along the western coast the climate is oceanic. In the mountainous areas of the interior the climate is continental. Finally, in the areas south of the High Atlas mountains the climate is desert and semi-desert.
Along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, along the northern coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, and in the northern inland plains, temperatures are mild and cool with hot and dry summers and wet and mild winters.
Proceeding inwards and southwards the temperatures increase considerably, in the desert areas of the south during the summer months maximum averages higher than 40 ° C are reached. In these areas, the temperature variations between day and night are also remarkable.
THE PRECIPITATIONS
The rains, which fall between November and March, are most abundant in the north of the country. At the northern end, the area of the Rif mountains is the rainiest area of Morocco, in this region some areas receive over 1,000 mm of rain per year, even the mountainous areas of the Middle Atlas are among the rainiest, with annual averages of about 800 mm.
The coastal plains along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the northern coast of the Atlantic Ocean receive an annual average of 400-800 mm of rain.
Going south, the rainfall gradually decreases until it reaches values of less than 200 mm per year in the desert regions of southern Morocco.
The mountainous areas of the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas, receive good quantities of snow during the winter months such as to allow the existence of ski areas such as that of Ifrane. Snow at altitudes of over two thousand meters is present for two to three months in the Rif mountains, and three to five months in the Atlas mountains.
The sea water temperature along the Atlantic Ocean coast varies between 18 ° C in the winter months and 21 ° C in the summer months.
WHEN TO GO TO MOROCCO
The best months for a trip to Morocco are the spring months between April and May. But depending on the climate of Morocco, June and September may also be suitable. The summer months of July and August can be good for a seaside stay along the coast, but not for visiting the internal areas of the country, due to the suffocating heat. For the visit of the desert areas of the country, the months of November, December, February, March and April may be fine.
