The canton of Valais is a bilingual (French and German) canton in southwestern Switzerland. Valais borders France to the west and Italy to the south. To the south is the impressive mountain range of the Alps with some 50 peaks over 4,000 metres, among which are famous mountains such as the Matterhorn (4,478 metres) and Monte Rosa (4,638 metres), at the northwest end of the canton is Lake Geneva. The towns of Valais have interesting Christmas markets, among the most beautiful those that take place in the towns of Sion and Martigny.
