Caen, capital of Lower Normandy, one of the two regions into which Normandy is divided, is a city of medieval origin, which developed under William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Partly destroyed during the battles and bombings of the Second World War, Caen retains several interesting historic buildings, among them the imposing medieval Castle of Caen (Château de Caen), the Men’s Abbey (abbaye aux Hommes) with the church of Santo Stephen (église Saint-Étienne) and the Ducal Palace (Palais Ducal), the Women’s Abbey (abbaye aux Dames) with the Trinity Church (église abbatiale de la Trinité), several other churches and palaces. Among the museums the most interesting is the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts) which houses one of the most important collections of prints in France and pictorial works by famous French, Italian and Flemish artists. The Caen Christmas Market is the most important event of the Advent period.
CAEN CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Caen Christmas Market (Marché de Noël). The Caen market takes place in the city center, in Place Saint Sauveur, where over 50 typical wooden houses are set up to recreate a Christmas atmosphere from other times, and where typical Christmas products are displayed, ranging from Christmas gastronomy to figurines cribs, up to handcrafted products from all over the world. In addition, an ice skating rink is usually set up on the place du Théâtre. During the Christmas holidays the Hôtel de Ville building is illuminated in a spectacular way, while the streets and squares of the city are enlivened by lots of music and events. Obviously, there will also be games, trains and entertainment for children this year. Visit the city of Caen this year to see if Santa Claus will be present at the Christmas market with his sleigh and his house.
