Located at the northwestern tip of France, Brest is an important military port, and the second largest city in Brittany. Founded as a fortified camp by the Romans, the city developed in the Middle Ages, when it was disputed between the Duke of Brittany and the King of England. In the 17th century Brest became an important military port of the French navy from where the commercial fleets departed for the Americas and the Indies. The city was razed to the ground during the Second World War, because the Germans had built an important naval base here. Due to the destruction caused by the aerial bombings of the Second World War, the city today has a modern appearance. Among the main attractions to visit in the city are: the Arsenal, the Castle (Château de Brest), the Tanguy Tower (Tour Tanguy), the modern Aquarium (Océanopolis), and the Marine Museum (Musée de la Marine).
