The Austrian Romantischste Strasse is a tourist route that, starting from Salzburg, crosses the regions of Salzburg, Upper Austria and Lower Austria, arriving as far as Vienna. In particular, the landscape areas crossed are those of the Salzkammergut, the lower Mühlviertel, the Strudengau, the Nibelungengau, and the Wachau.
THE ITINERARY
The itinerary winds along an area made up of splendid landscapes of lakes and mountains. Along its path, the Austrian Romantic Road touches 30 towns worthy of a visit, not forgetting museums, monasteries, castles, fortresses. But along this splendid itinerary you can also reach landscaped areas of great charm, including national parks, and places declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Among the most interesting centers that you can visit along this itinerary, in addition to the two cities of arrival and departure, Salzburg and Vienna, we can indicate many others. These include the Mondsee lake, the Wolfgangsee lake with the villages of St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, the spa town of Bad Ischl. Another must-see is the Hallstatt Salt Mine area. Lake Traunsee with the town of Gmunden is another enchanting landscape area. Just as the ancient city of Wels and the quaint town of Steyr deserve a stop. The town of Enns with the nearby Sankt Florian abbey are also interesting mede of this itinerary.
Other stopping points not to be missed on this Austrian tourist route are the village of Grein with its mighty castle, the imposing Benedictine abbey of Melk, the medieval town of Krems an der Donau, and the baroque abbey of Klosterneuburg.
