Ansbach, located just 45 km west of Nuremberg, is the capital of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia). The city was founded in medieval times and remained an independent principality (Brandenburg-Ansbach) until the end of the 18th century, when it was incorporated into Prussia. The historic center of the city was not destroyed during the Second World War and thus kept its Baroque character intact. The most interesting buildings are the Castle of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach and the churches of St. Johannis and St. Gumbertus. The Ansbach Christmas Market attracts tourists looking for handicrafts and gift ideas.
