Located in northern France, this Picardy town is famous for its 13th-century Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amiens cathedral is the largest in France, twice the size of Notre-Dame in Paris, measuring 145 meters long and 112 meters high. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Belfry of Amiens, 52 meters high and made up of a square base built in the 15th century and a stone structure, which encloses the clock, built in the 18th century. For lovers of science fiction and Jules Verne’s novels, Verne’s house is located in Amiens where a rich museum has been set up with an adjoining documentation center.
AMIENS CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Amiens Christmas Market (Marché de Noël, Parfums d’hiver). Set up in various places in the city, it is the largest Christmas market in northern France. Usually among the attractions of the Christmas market are Santa Claus’s chalet (Chalet du Père Noël) and the chalet of the Christmas trees which are usually set up in the place de l’Hôtel de Ville, the square is also dominated by a large tree decorated and lit. In nearby place Gambetta, games and entertainment are organized for children, and a cross-country ski trail is often set up with the wonderful magical chalet. The Amiens Christmas Market is made up of about 135 wooden houses, which extend over the squares and streets of the city for almost 2 km in length. In the Amiens market you will find many stalls dedicated to local crafts, to animate the city there are also Christmas shows for young and old, and the merchants of the city center with their decorated windows. As evening falls, a sound and light show takes place every day at 7 pm on the facade of Amiens Cathedral.
