The city of Altötting is located in Bavaria, close to the Austrian border, between the cities of Passau, Salzburg and Munich. Altötting is an important center of Marian pilgrimage, in fact here is the Gnadenkapelle, a chapel that houses a miraculous image of the Madonna, the wooden statue of the Black Madonna. Just 10 km east of Altötting is the small village of Marktl am Inn, the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI. The Altötting Christmas Market is the town’s most important event in the run-up to Christmas.
ALTÖTTING CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Christmas Market (Altöttinger Christkindlmarkt) in Kapellplatz. The Altötting Christmas Market (Altöttinger Christkindlmarkt) takes place in the central Kapellplatz (Chapel Square) overlooked by the most important Baroque buildings of the town. The square with its palaces and churches, and with the Gnadenkapelle in the centre, represents a splendid setting for the Christmas market. The Christmas market is made up of numerous wooden chalets where local handmade objects and many Bavarian gastronomic specialties are exhibited. The crib exhibition held in the Sala della Congregazione is also very rich.
