When to go to Austria: the climate of Austria

This post is also available in: Italiano

Austria has two types of climate, the Alpine climate predominates in the western and southern section of the country, in correspondence with the Alpine chain, while in the north-eastern part, particularly along the Danube plain, the climate is continental. Let’s see when to go to Austria.

TWO TYPES OF CLIMATE: ALPINE AND CONTINENTAL

The regions of Tyrol, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia and Voralberg have a highly variable alpine climate, with summer rains, cold and snowy winters, and large differences in temperatures between the daily minimums and maximums.

In Innsbruck, Tyrol, the average minimum temperatures remain below zero from November to February, with average minimum temperatures of -5.2 ° C in January, the average maximum winter temperatures vary between 3 ° C and 6 ° C. In summer, the average maximum temperatures vary between 22 ° C and 24 ° C, while the average minimum summer temperatures vary between 10 ° C and 12 ° C.

The rains are greatest between June and August, and generally fall in the form of short thunderstorms, while winter is the least rainy period. Snow falls from November to April, but in the high mountains it can snow even in midsummer. The average annual rainfall in Innsbruck is almost 900 mm.

The regions of Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Burgenland are affected by the continental climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters, often with the presence of wind, which in winter sometimes considerably lowers the temperature. In Vienna, the average minimum winter temperatures remain below zero between December and February, reaching -2 ° C in January, the average maximum winter temperatures vary between 3 ° C and 5 ° C. In summer, the average maximum temperatures are above 25 ° C in July and August, with average minimum temperatures of 15 ° C in the same months. Here the rains are less intense than in the areas subject to the alpine climate, and generally well distributed throughout each month of the year, Vienna, for example, receives an average of just over 600 mm of rain per year.
