Lower Austria gravitates around Vienna, and this has contributed to clouding, from a tourist point of view, the historical and cultural value of the region. But here there are numerous attractions for tourists. Among the things to see in Lower Austria you will find castles such as those of Schlosshof, Burg Liechtenstein, Schloss Pöggstall and Schloss Rosenburg, and there are also spas, among the best known is Baden bei Wien.

In Lower Austria there are important archaeological areas such as Carnuntum. Other things to see in Lower Austria are the many abbeys and sanctuaries in the region such as the famous ones at Melk, Klosterneuburg, Lilienfeld, Göttweig, Zwettl, and Heiligenkreuz.

MEDIEVAL CITIES AND FOOD AND WINE

Lower Austria is also known for its medieval villages and towns, among the most beautiful are Hainburg an der Donau, Krems an der Donau, Drosendorf an der Thaya, Perchtoldsdorf, Dürnstein. The region of Lower Austria also attracts tourists for its food and wine circuits. Among the most renowned areas in this respect we find the Weinviertel, a hilly region located north-east of Vienna, which is renowned for the production of wines.

As for natural beauty, Lower Austria has numerous protected areas, including two important national parks and 16 nature parks. The Donau-Auen National Park (Nationalpark Donau-Auen), which protects the course of the Danube between Vienna and the border with Slovakia, and the Thayatal National Park (Nationalpark Thayatal), along the border with the Czech Republic.

In Lower Austria there are also sites declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site: The Semmering railway between Gloggnitz, in Lower Austria, and Semmering, in Styria, and the cultural landscape of Wachau, which includes the course of the Danube between the cities by Melk and Krems.

Finally, the region is crossed by some interesting tourist itineraries such as those of the Romantic Road (Romantikstraße), or the Baroque Road.
