Vorarlberg is an Austrian region characterized by a largely mountainous territory. Natural attractions are indeed the main things to see in Vorarlberg. The region, in its north-western extremity, also overlooks Lake Constance. Here is the regional capital, the town of Bregenz. This city is an important tourist destination on the shores of the lake with a small medieval historic center and numerous cultural attractions.
A SERIES OF HISTORIC CITIES
Among the historic towns to see in Vorarlberg, the most beautiful is probably Feldkirch. It is a typically medieval town: there are remains of the walls, gates and towers and is dominated by the imposing Schattenburg, the ancient medieval residence of the counts of Montfort. Among the other historic centers, in addition to the aforementioned, Feldkirch and Bregenz, the towns of Hohenems, Bludenz, Dornbirn and Schwarzenberg are worth mentioning.
Another interesting destination in the region is the Bregenzerwald, a hilly area located south-east of Bregenz. This area is known for its wooden architecture and for the ancient traditions that still survive there. The Bregenzerwald is an area appreciated for its unspoiled nature, ancient traditions and genuine hospitality. The region is also famous as a ski region and for its hiking and biking trails.
However, Vorarlberg is mainly known for its mountains and for the possibility of practicing winter sports in excellent ski centers. Among the most popular we can mention those of Schruns, Zürs, Lech am Arlberg, Damüls, Brand, Warth, and Stuben. In the winter season, winter sports enthusiasts will find ideal conditions for their favorite sport: skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and sledding. From a landscape point of view, some beautiful Alpine panorama roads such as those of the Silvretta-Hochalpenstrasse and the Arlberg cross the region.
