The climate of Quito: when to go to Quito

This post is also available in: Deutsch

The city of Quito is located in the northern Andean highlands of Ecuador at an altitude of over 2,800 meters. The plateau where is the city is located on the flanks of the Pichincha volcano (4,784 meters) and the position of the city is very close to the Equator. Because of its position in relation to the equator and its high altitude, Quito has a subtropical climate of altitude characterized by cool and constant temperatures throughout the year and two seasons, one wet and one dry.

A CLIMATE WITH STABLE TEMPERATURES WITH SEASONS WHICH DIFFERENTIATE ACCORDING TO THE PRECIPITATIONS

The annual average temperature in Quito is 15.8 ° C. As mentioned the temperatures vary little during the year. The average maximum temperatures vary between 22.2 / 22.3 ° C in August and September – that are the hottest months – and 20.8 / 20.9 ° C in March and April – which are the coldest months – . The average minimum temperatures instead vary between 10.2 ° C of April and 9.4 ° C in the months of July and September.

The climate of Quito differs therefore mainly based on rainfall: there is a dry season lasting for four months between June and September and a rainy season lasting for eight months between October and May. The average precipitation is about 1,100 mm per year. July and August are the driest months with less than 30 mm of rain each, while April with more than 170 mm of rain is the wettest month. Inside the rainy seasonwe can highlight a wettest period which runs from February to May, and a relatively dry period from November to January.

Quito has an average of 128 rainy days per year. The months of July and August have only 5 days of rain each, while the months of March and April have 15 days of rain each. The city of Quito has an average of 2,058 hours of sunshine annually. The average annual humidity is 77%, but it varies between 65% in August and 82% in March and April.

WHEN TO GO TO QUITO

The best months for a trip to Quito are those of the dry season, that is, those who go from June to September. The other months of the year – especially those between November and February – can be quite good.
