The city of Weimar is an important historic German city in Thuringia, located southwest of Leipzig, between Erfurt and Jena. Weimar is known both because between 1919 and 1933 it was the seat of the German Weimar republic, and for the numerous poets and artists, who made Weimar, between the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, one of the most famous and important centers of European culture and classicism, Goethe and Schiller lived here, and today their houses have become museums that can be visited , the city is full of beautiful castles, palaces and gardens, including the castles Belvedere, Ettersburg, Tiefurt and the Wittumpalais palace, the city is also home to the tombs of Goethe and Schiller. Weimar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
WEIMAR CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Christmas Market (Weimarer Weihnacht). The Christmas Market is held in the market square, the food stands offer roasted almonds, sweets and other traditional products of the region, the market stalls exhibit wooden toys typical of Thuringia, blown glass objects. Weimar offers a large Advent calendar, which takes shape in the Gothic town hall overlooking the market square, every day of the advent one of the windows of the building is illuminated. The city boasts of being the first in Germany to have made a public Christmas tree, between 1815 and 1816. In memory of this tradition a few days before the official opening of the Christmas Market, a large and tall Christmas tree is erected in the center of the market square, the ceremony takes place accompanied by the Christmas carols of the local choirs.
