Leipzig, the most important city in Saxony together with Dresden, is famous for its musical and literary traditions, linked to the names of great composers, writers and mathematicians such as Bach, Wagner, Nietzsche, Leibniz and Mendelssohn.
The city originated in the Middle Ages and was the site of an important market since the 12th century, later it developed its reputation as an important cultural center, the university was founded in the 15th century and is one of the oldest in Germany. In the 17th century, Leipzig was one of the main European cultural centers at the forefront of scientific (astronomy, optics, physics) and humanistic (music, publishing) studies.
Today the city has a beautiful historic center, called Innenstadt, with beautiful arcades full of shops, among the most visited attractions the Gothic Church of St. Thomas (Thomaskirche) where the famous Thomanerchor choir, founded in the thirteenth century, is located. The ancient Renaissance town hall (Altes Rathaus) from the 16th century is very beautiful, and now houses the Civic Museum, and the Bachmuseum, dedicated to the great musician, and the Grassi-Museum, practically three museums in one, with the Museum of Ethnography, Museum of Musical Instruments and Museum of Decorative Arts.
LEIPZIG CHRISTMAS MARKET
1) Leipzig Christmas Market (Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt). Leipzig boasts the second oldest market in Germany, in fact it dates back to 1458. Made up of more than 250 stalls that crowd the beautiful historic center, the Leipzig market is famous in Germany for its culinary specialties and for the many events that take place there organized. To visit the Medieval Market which recreates the atmosphere of the markets of the past.
Among the events you will find organ concerts in the churches of the city, traditional Christmas carols from the balcony of the old town hall, Christmas shows, and for the little ones the forest of tales and the ever-present Santa Claus.
